Kdrama Review: Crash Landing on You (사랑의 불시착)

https://asianwiki.com/Crash_Landing_on_You

Genre:
Romance, Kdrama

Rating: TV-14

Episodes: 16

Summary: A wealthy heiress has a paragliding incident where she lands across the border in North Korea.

Plot: 4/5  Okay, I did not expect to enjoy this series that much, but it had so many touching scenes and sobering moments. Overall, it’s an unrealistic Romeo & Juliet kind of story, but what GOT ME CRYING were all the scenes of family, sacrificial love, and brotherhood. Despite how unrealistic the circumstances of romance were, I actually quite liked the romance story this time around. While some ridiculous things happened (I mean, come on, it’s a Kdrama, so what can I expect), overall I quite enjoyed it. For example, the ending probably could never happen, but I liked it and was satisfied with it.
What also had me crying was the very real and current state of North and South Korea relations right now and throughout history. I was saddened by the reminder that there are real families separated across borders even though it’s not even a long distance away.
I also enjoyed seeing the portrayal of North Korean life, from the jangmadangs (local markets) to the lack of electricity to the highly regulated hair styles. I’m sure a lot of the North Korean scenes were dramatized, but I appreciated the steps taken to represent the country and its people as people living their everyday lives.
Now, I hope that when people in North Korea get their hands on a copy of this drama, they don’t think it’s actually this easy to leave North Korea. This drama made it seem way too simple and even for a wealthy family, I’m sure it’s a very difficult process to defect from the county.

Characters: 5/5
Y’all, I LOVE the captain’s little band of soldiers. They were precious cinnamon rolls! I loved that they looked out for each other and even grew to love and respect the main female character. Unfortunately, this portrayal of North Korean soldiers is probably not the most accurate, but to be honest, they made the series work! *SPOILER ALERT* One of my favorite scenes is when they had a chance to watch a soccer game between South Korea and Japan. Given the tragic & painful history between the Koreas & Japan, it was strangely touching to see these North Korean soldiers joyfully celebrating the winning goals of South Korea. *ANOTHER SPOILER ALERT* Another thing about the soldiers that stuck out to me is that they chose to return to North Korea, knowing that things would be difficult for them or they might even lose their lives. I have not personally met many people from North Korea, but I once had an opportunity to meet with refugees from North Korea. They struggled so hard to leave their home country, so I was amazed that many of them said if they had the chance they would go back to North Korea to bring the rest of their family and friends. It really made me reflect on what things and people I would risk my life for. It also made me reflect on how a lot of the privileged and developed world don’t even fathom what some people go through just to have a better life not for themselves, but for other people.

Actors: 4/5
I have watched interviews of North Korean defectors reviewing this series, and apparently some of the actors’ North Korean accents were pretty spot on! (not the MC though lol)

Hyun-Bin | Son Ye-Jin | Seo Ji-Hye | Kim Jung-Hyun | Yang Kyung-Won | Lee Sin-Young | Yoo Su-Bin | Tang Joon-Sang | Jeon Kuk-Hwan | Oh Man-Seok | Kim Young-Min

Special Effects: 4/5 I’m definitely not an expert on fighting or North Korea, but as I mentioned before, I thought the drama-makers paid attention to detail as best they could while still keeping the story entertaining. I read an article that says the portrayal of North Korea is maybe 60% accurate.

My Score: 4/5 So yes, the romance is good, but it’s the characters and details of North Korea that made this series worth the watch. Highly recommend!

Kdrama: Abyss (어비스)

http://asianwiki.com/Abyss_(Korean_Drama)

Genre: Fantasy, Crime, Romance, Kdrama

Rating: TV-14

Episodes: 16

Summary: A rich heir and a successful prosecutor die (in separate circumstances), only to wake up in bodies that represents their souls.

Plot: 3/5 The story has a super interesting premise and concept, but the chase for the antagonist just felt SO SLOW.  I think I was expecting WAY too much because the first episode and the trailer were really good.  The overall romance was alright, but again, so slow. The ending was very confusing too…

Characters: 4/5 The detective character is THE MVP! 😀

Actors: 3/5 Park Bo-Young | Ahn Hyo-Seop | Kwon Soo-Hyun | Lee Si-Un | Song Sang-Eun | Han So-Hee | Yun Yoo-Sun

Special Effects: 4/5 The abyss effects were pretty cool!

My Score: 3/5 As I said, it had a great premise, but fell a bit short. Not a bad series, but not the greatest either.

Kdrama Review: My Holo Love (나 홀로 그대)

http://asianwiki.com/My_Holo_Love

Genre: Romance, Comedy, Sci-fi, Kdrama

Rating: TV-14

Episodes: 12

Summary: A girl with aphasia finds a pair of glasses that allow her to see a holographic A.I. helper.

Plot: 3/5 I can almost give it a 4/5 but the plot is kind of an overdone concept from the past few years. After seeing the trailer, I was automatically reminded of “Are You Human Too” and “I am Not a Robot.’ However, I thought “My Holo Love” was significantly better. That being said, the romance was a bit…sudden. I kinda skipped through the beginning so I felt like the confessions of “I like you” were very sudden… The ending was great (not just the romance but the overall plot and sci-fi conflict), so I can’t complain 🙂

Characters: 4/5 I thought the girl was annoying at first, but she grew on me. Main guy has the tragic backstory I like. To be honest though, the side characters were the true MVPs. FOR EXAMPLE, the noona character was really cool.

Actors: 4/5 The acting was sooo gooood! I CRY.Yoon Hyun-Min | Ko Sung-Hee | Choi Yeo-Jin | Chansung | Jung Young-Ki

Special Effects: 4/5 The effects were really good! Since this is a world where A.I. and holographic images good enough to look real exist, they did a good job portraying that.

My Score: 4/5 I’d recommend it! I thoroughly enjoyed it 🙂

Kdrama review: Psychopath Diary (싸이코패스 다이어리)

http://asianwiki.com/Psychopath_Diary

Genre: Mystery, Comedy, Kdrama

Rating: TV-14

Episodes: 16

Summary: A timid office worker witnesses a crime, only to lose his memory due to an accident right after – when the true criminal’s diary is found next to him, he mistakenly believes himself to be a psychopath.

Plot: 3/5 The story has a nice premise, but it was SOOOO frustrating to watch sometimes because the main character just would NOT realize he wasn’t a psychopath! 😂 That being said, it’s pretty funny, and there are quite a few heart-warming moments!

Characters: 4/5 Such a cinnamon roll! XD

Actors: 4/5 Yoon Si-Yoon | Jung In-Sun | Park Sung-Hoon | Lee Han-Wi | Hwang Hyo-Eun | Kim Kyeol | Jung Su-Bin | So Hee-Jung | Choi Sung-Won | Heo Sung-Tae

Special Effects: 4/5

My Score: 3/5 It’s not a bad story, but like I said, it was frustrating to watch as the audience! It was pretty funny though!

Kdrama Review: Vagabond (배가본드)

http://asianwiki.com/Vagabond_(Korean_Drama)

Genre: Thriller, Action, Kdrama

Rating: TV-MA

Episodes: 16

Summary: A stuntman finds himself entangled in a national conspiracy following the aftermath of his nephew’s death in a tragic plane crash. (I was CRYING after watching episode 1.)

Plot: 3/5 While the plot had a lot of potential, it never clicked together in my opinion.

There were a lot of thrilling moments, and some episodes were actually quite good. However, all the political/corruption drama felt too convoluted, especially with tying it into the tragedy of the plane accident. In addition, all the big reveals happened too late in the story, and it ended with an open ending. :/ I like the things I watch to have a concrete ending, or at least promise of a concrete ending. This one literally felt like they ran out of time and cut the story short.

Characters: 3/5 I think the best way to describe the characters is “too much.”

Actors: 3/5 I was hoping for more, and to be fair, there are some well-acted scenes throughout…but overall, just meh. Lee Seung-Gi | Bae Suzy | Shin Sung-Rok | Baek Yoon-Sik | Moon Sung-Geun | Kim Min-Jong | Lee Ki-Young | Jeong Man-Sik | Hwang Bo-Ra | Kim Jong-Soo | Shin Seung-Hwan | Kim Min-Seo | Lee Kyoung-Young | Moon Jeong-Hee | Ryu Won | Kim Jung-Hyun | Park Ah-In | Ko Kyu-Pil | Choi Dae-Chul | Jang Hyuk-Jin

Special Effects: 4/5 The fight and action scenes were very well done!

My Score: 2/5 I originally had this overall score at 3/5, but…it was quite disappointing. 😦 There were a lot of good elements, but it just didn’t come together cohesively.

Kdrama Review: Tomorrow With You (내일 그대와)

http://asianwiki.com/Tomorrow_With_You

Genre: Romance, Time Travel, Kdrama

Rating: TV-14

Episodes: 16

Summary: In his attempt to change the circumstances surrounding his future death, a young time traveler ends up meeting his wife.

Plot: 4/5 Okay okay, this is, yet again, another time travel drama, but I quite enjoyed it! To be fair, I kind of skipped over the antagonist plot because I was way more interested in how the MC would resolve his own personal issue. It was interesting to see how the character would react to his own story, and how his reactions led to the actions that caused him to react in the first place…(confusing but I thought it worked for the story.) I also liked that the marital drama was portrayed genuinely (as much as I expect it to be). The comedy was just right, and while it is definitely a DRAMA, I didn’t feel like it was too much or too cringey.

I must admit, I shocked myself while watching this drama because I have gotten to the point where I recognize kdrama references within kdramas. For example, I was quite proud of myself when I got the Nine reference ;;;;; ……. wow

Characters: 4/5 Likable characters in my opinion!

Actors: 4/5 Lee Je-Hoon was really great in this one! And I thought Shin Min-A was great too! Kim Ye-Won | Lee Jung-Eun | Lee Bong-Ryun | Jo Han-Chul | Kang Ki-Doong | Park Joo-Hee | Oh Gwang-Rok | Baek Hyun-Jin | Chae Dong-Hyun | Hwang Hee

Special Effects: 4/5 Time travel effects were cool!

My Score: 4/5 Overall, I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I’d recommend it! 😀 I could see myself going back and re-watching clips.

Kdrama Review: Bring It On, Ghost (싸우자 귀신아)

http://asianwiki.com/Bring_it_on,_Ghost

Genre: Romance, Supernatural, Kdrama

Rating: TV-14

Episodes: 16

Summary: A guy who can see ghosts teams up with a ghost to make money from exorcisms.

Plot: 3/5 So. The story was quite predictable, but I still found myself enjoying the series. It has just the right amount of cheese (for me to handle) and enough conflict resolution to keep me satisfied. There are also quite a few touching moments…For example, I definitely cried during one episode with the kid in the apartment. T.T

Characters: 3/5 The girl was kinda annoying at the beginning, but her character grew on me. The monk is the true MVP.

Actors: 3/5 TaecYeon | Kim So-Hyun | Kwon Yool | Kim Sang-Ho | Lee Do-Yeon | Kang Ki-Young | David Lee | Baek Seo-E

Special Effects: 4/5

My Score: 3/5 While I give this a 3/5, I strangely enjoyed watching this series. I’d still recommend it! 🙂

Kdrama Review: Arthdal Chronicles (아스달 연대기)

http://asianwiki.com/Arthdal_Chronicles

Genre: Fantasy, Kdrama

Rating: TV-MA

Episodes: 18

Summary: On the day that the blue comet crossed the sky, three children were born at the same time and are destined to bring change to the ancient land of Arth.

Plot: 4/5 Watching this series was like watching Dragon Prince + Shannara Chronicles + Merlin, all series that I really love. The overall fantasy setting seems pretty unique for a Kdrama because most fantasy dramas from Korea deal with Korean mythology. This series gives off western fantasy vibes. Some of the aspects that I thought were well-done are the details behind each tribe, how they come to understand civilization, and how the tribes interact with each other.

Characters: 5/5 There are SO many characters within these 18 episodes. These characters are constantly changing as well, so it was always interesting to see what they would do next. For example, it was quite interesting to see a shift in motivation behind certain characters who came from a happy, yet naive tribe – once they were introduced to a “civilized” world, they started to understand things like slavery, revenge, and greed. I thought it reflected a lot about today’s society actually. O.O

Actors: 4/5 Jang Dong-Gun | Song Joong-Ki | Kim Ji-Won | Kim Ok-Vin | Park Hae-Joon | Kim Eui-Sung | Lee Do-Kyung | Cho Seong-Ha | Jo Seung-Yeon | Ko Bo-Gyeol | Jung Suk-Yong | Yoo Teo | Nichkhun | Kim Sung-Cheol | etc etc, so many others!!!

Special Effects: 5/5 For a TV series Korean drama, effects were amazing!

My Score: 4/5 I REALLLY enjoyed this series! Now I just need a continuation because it ended on a super ambiguous note T.T Will there be a season 2 though T.T

Kdrama Review: Watcher (왓쳐)

http://asianwiki.com/Watcher_(Korean_Drama)

Genre: Thriller, Suspense, Crime, Kdrama

Rating: TV-14 (but I might personally give it a TV-MA)

Episodes: 16

Summary: A detective, police officer, and lawyer are connected by a tragic event from 15 years ago, and all find themselves working together on a newly-formed internal affairs investigation team.

Plot: 4/5 The story is kind of confusing, but most of the loose ends came together at the end. Although it was a very heavy plot, I kept coming back to it because I wanted to know who was behind each action that took place within the story. It felt like new answers just led to more questions, so it kept me intrigued.

Characters: 4/5 The main characters were so distinct and likeable (most of them). If a character wasn’t likable, then it was for good reason for the sake of the story.

Actors: 5/5 WOW, I was blown away. The acting was great! Han Suk-Kyu | Seo Kang-Joon (I remember watching him in “Are You Human, Too?” and he was great in that. I felt like this role suited him very well too.) | Kim Hyun-Joo | Heo Sung-Tae | Park Joo-Hee | Joo Jin-Mo | Kim Soo-Jin | Ahn Kil-Kang | Lee Jae-Yoon | Jung Do-Won | Kim Dae-Gun

Special Effects: 5/5 The action scenes were quite exciting! The cinematography excellent! (Especially the opening slow-motion scenes with the epic OST in the background XD)

My Score: 4/5 Hmm….I was conflicted on how to rate the whole thing, but I think I have to go with a 4/5. The story is way too heavy to re-watch, but I thought it was a well-pieced together mystery/crime drama.

Kdrama Review: Blood (블러드)

http://asianwiki.com/Blood_(Korean_Drama)

Genre: Romance, Fantasy, Supernatural, Comedy, Kdrama

Rating: TV-14

Episodes: 20 (1 hour episodes)

Summary: A doctor tries to find a way to stay within his profession despite his condition…of being a vampire.

Plot: 3/5 So, the premise is…well, not the most unique. (Flashback to “Being Human”). However, that is probably what drew me to this series in the first place. The story is not the greatest, but there were some moments that I thought were entertaining and exciting to watch.

I will say, I was mad impressed that they got the use of lorazepam right for alcohol withdrawal syndrome. I think a lot of other medical things were pretty accurate too (Albeit, I’m sure there were a lot of things that were NOT accurate as well haha)

Characters: 3/5 To be honest, I thought most of the main characters were pretty MEH. I had one favorite character who was the ultimate cinnamon roll, but you know what that means…T.T

Actors: 3/5 Ahn Jae-Hyeon | Ku Hye-Sun | Ji Jin-Hee | Jung Hae-In

Special Effects: 3/5 Pretty typical of a supernatural vampire drama!

My Score: 3/5 Not my favorite series. If you like vampire stories, then there are much better ones out there. I wouldn’t recommend this as a first choice, but if you’ve run out of things to watch, it was alright.
